GOP Women's Rights Leader Chastises NOW For Endorsing Marty Golden's State Senate Opponent

Brooklyn NOW President Shirley Ranz is getting some strong backlash after her endorsement of Andrew Gounardes over GOP incumbent Marty Golden for state Senate.

golden fail lady.jpgIn NOW's endorsement, as our Kenneth Lovett reported yesterday, Ranz called Gounardes "on the right side of women's issues" while taking shots at Golden as "out of touch" with them for pitching a deportment class for businesswomen.

Mary Reilly, president of the New York State Federation of Republican Women, chastised NOW for the endorsement and backed Golden's efforts.

"It is no surprise that NOW would endorse Senator Golden's opponent since NOW is notorious for endorsing Democrats whether the person is qualified for the seat they are seeking or not," Reilly said in a statement.

"In her endorsement, Ranz focused more on Senator Golden than she did on his opponent, which leads one to believe that the press release was nothing more than a vehicle to take a cheap shot at Senator Golden."

In her endorsement email, Ranz criticized Golden's canceled etiquette class as insulting and "an outdated, sexist seminar straight out of Mad Men" as evidence that the senator does not understand women's issues. In her response, Reilly said Golden has worked hard at a number of issues that benefit all New Yorkers, including women.

"If NOW believes that intelligent women will ignore Senator Golden's record of excellence in addressing these issues and instead will vote for someone who has no experience in Albany, then I have to wonder what exactly the organization stands for," she said. "Savvy women vote for a person based on his or her ability to get things done. Senator Marty Golden is a hard working advocate for every New Yorker."
