The Dangers of Obesity in Women | Diet and Fitness Diaries

Extreme obese women are putting their health and their lives at risk by remaining heavy. While obesity affects both sexes and can ruin the health of men and women, extreme obese women face some special health challenges that men don?t have to worry about.

One condition that only extreme obese women will face because it?s related to their reproductive system is PCOS. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can occur in any woman, overweight or not, but it?s much more common among overweight and obese women.

It can even occur in young girls who are just entering puberty, but generally doesn?t unless they?re overweight. When it occurs very young, serious reproductive problems can result.

PCOS is a condition that can go hand in hand with insulin resistance. When a person is overweight and/or eating a diet rich in simple carbs that are absorbed quickly into the bloodstream, insulin resistance can occur pretty easily.

This is when the body?s insulin production is no longer enough to remove the blood sugar from the blood stream. The body has become insulin resistant because of the large amounts that have been released by necessity over a period of time.

While a person can be insulin resistant and not have PCOS, if a person develops the condition it?s generally because they?re insulin resistant and essentially pre-diabetic. PCOS causes small cysts to grow on the ovaries. While the cysts themselves aren?t harmful, they cause hormone imbalances that lead to other problems.

A hallmark of PCOS is elevated testosterone levels. This male hormone in too high levels in females like extreme obese women can cause things like facial hair growth, excessive hair growth in places like the face, stomach and back, and problems with the reproductive cycle.

When too much testosterone is present in a woman?s body, menstrual periods can be delayed, irregular and either very light or very heavy. In some cases, periods can stop altogether. PCOS can affect the reproductive cycle so much that it can be difficult or impossible for a woman to get pregnant.

PCOS causes weight gain, and can make it very difficult for extreme obese women or any women to lose weight. Acne flare-ups are often a sign of PCOS too, because high levels of testosterone are linked with acne break outs.

Another symptom of PCOS is depression. While being obese can also contribute to depression, the hormone changes and fluctuations caused by PCOS can directly contribute to feelings of sadness and depression, too.

While doctors say that PCOS can?t be prevented, eating healthy, getting regular exercise and not smoking are the recommended treatments for the condition. So it stands to reason that if you practice these things already, even if you?re pre-disposed to developing the condition you may never suffer symptoms of the disease.

PCOS can strike any girl, even teenagers, but those who eat poor diets, don?t exercise, and smoke are at a greater risk. For extreme obese women, it?s almost not a matter of whether or not they?ll get PCOS, but when.

FLORIDA DEAF 6

Eric LeFors may not have won his first game as head coach, but the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind football team showed progress in its 22-6 loss against Oak Hall on Thursday night. ?It was a hard pill to swallow,? LeFors said. ? The inexperienced LeFors had experience to rely on, coming most of all from fifth-year starting quarterback Corey Koski. He finished with a touchdown and 124 rushing yards on 15 attempts. ? ?They were a young and aggressive defense, so while a few times I was able to beat them they got me back just as many times. My offensive line did a very good job blocking; there were plenty of holes open all night,? Koski said. ? Oak Hall managed to keep FSDB out of the end zone for the better part of three quarters. And besides a 39-yard rush on his first carry, Koski was stifled in the first half. ? The Dragons finished with 209 rushing yards on 28 attempts.

Beijing apologized for the embarrassing incident on Monday, in which an unidentified man ripped the Japanese flag from the ambassador?s car amid rising tensions over disputed islands in the East China Sea.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said the government was undertaking a ?serious investigation? and would guarantee foreign diplomats? safety. That did not stop Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba from formally demanding an investigation on Tuesday, calling the incident ?deplorable.?

Thousands of anti-Japanese protesters took to the streets of cities across China last weekend for the second straight week, burning Japanese flags and vandalizing Japanese restaurants and businesses.

The violence is the latest flare-up of a long-simmering row between Beijing and Tokyo over ownership of a handful of uninhabited rocky islands known here as the Diaoyu and in Japan as the Senkaku islands. The islands are surrounded by fishing grounds, and sovereignty would confer rights over nearby undersea oil and gas deposits.

The most recent war of words broke out between the two Asian neighbors a month ago, when Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda appeared to suggest that his government might seek to buy the islands from their private Japanese owner, an idea championed by maverick Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara.

That prompted a sharp response from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, who expressed Beijing?s ?strong displeasure? with what he called Mr. Noda?s ?highly irresponsible? remarks.

Tensions rose further when a group of Chinese activists from Hong Kong landed on one of the disputed islands on Aug.15, the 67th ?anniversary of Japan?s surrender at the end of World War II.

After they had been arrested by the Japanese coast guard and expelled from Japan, a group of right wing Japanese activists landed on another of the islands to make their own point for a couple of hours, before coast guard officials persuaded them to leave.

Nationalist and anti-Japanese sentiment is strong in China, where the authorities have long encouraged it in their citizens from an early age through history books that often inflame resentment against the former invaders.

The Chinese government faces a delicate task, however, not wanting to appear soft on Japan yet anxious to keep protests from turning into expressions of dissatisfaction with the Chinese authorities themselves, or from spilling over into violence that might seriously harm relations with Tokyo.

The Japanese authorities too appear anxious not to let the dispute get out of hand. The government yesterday refused a request from the Tokyo municipality for permission to land a delegation on the islands.

Thomas Edison artifacts need repair

When Thomas Edison finally hung up his lab coat, it still had acid burns from chemistry experiments carried out at the U.S. inventor's West Orange laboratory in New Jersey. Repairs helped erased the burn marks, but added wear and tear from decades of display on a wire hanger has compelled the U.S. National Park Service to launch a new conservation project.

The worn lab coat is just one of three artifacts in need of repair at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park. A second object, a faded American flag, represented a 1920 gift commemorating the 43rd anniversary of the "Ediphone" dictating machine. The third artifact hangs behind Edison's desk in his laboratory library ? a projection screen that is likely the world's oldest movie screen by being dated to at least 1893.

"Probably most significant of the three is Edison's laboratory coat," said Joan Harris-Rico, collections manager at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park. "It's made of cotton in the duster style, and has hung in the chemistry lab for decades."

    1. Egypt's 'Google Earth pyramids' revisited

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Remember that researcher who thought she spotted previously undiscovered Egyptian pyramids in Google Earth imagery? There really are some ruins in one of the pictures, but they?re not pyramids.

The National Park Service has $20,000 in funding approved for cleaning and repairing the artifacts housed at Edison's former West Orange laboratory and Glenmont home. That laboratory complex came after Edison's first lab, built in Menlo Park, N.J.

Edison remains celebrated for having helped pioneer practical light bulbs, the sound recording industry and for helping commercialize movies. But his artifacts also bear silent testimony to the legacy of laying down the blueprint for modern innovation ? bringing together a diverse group of Ph.D. chemists, machinists and inventors to all work under the same roof. [ Thomas Edison: America's First Modern Innovator ]

The lab coat carried a particularly poignant note for visitors as a personal reminder of Edison's work. But the national park staff has removed the coat from public display until it can be repaired.

"It not only has high historical value, but is also a favorite object of returning visitors," Harris-Rico told InnovationNewsDaily. "People will often ask, 'Where is the lab coat?'"

The U.S. flag remains on display in a wood and glass wall-mounted case, but its fabric colors have faded from 90 years of exposure to ultraviolet light. The fabric has "puckered" due to gravity's inexorable pull, and it also shows signs of both insect activity and water damage.

Harris-Rico and her colleagues hope to return the repaired flag to a new display case that has UV-filtered Plexiglas protection and without the acidic cardboard backing in the existing case.

Conservators could remove both the lab coat and flag to do their preservation work, but they probably won't enjoy the same luxury with Edison's ancient projection screen. The huge canvas, stretching 18 feet by 18 feet, hangs from a wood roller attached to the underside of the library's second floor balcony.

The screen's blemishes include at least one tear and brittleness near its stained bottom edge. But the full extent of the damage remains unknown until the screen gets unrolled ? a process still done manually by a large wooden handle almost 120 years later.

Jeffrey Johnson, 58, an out-of-work accessories designer, killed Steve Ercolino, with whom he had been feuding, on Friday morning in midtown Manhattan. Nine bystanders were wounded as the result of police gunfire, three of them hit by bullets and six injured by fragments caused when police hollow-point bullets ricocheted off concrete planters.

Johnson left his apartment on Manhattan's Upper East Side that morning as he always did, around 8 a.m., wearing a suit, neighbors said.

"He left the keys in an envelope for the landlord with no intention of ever coming back," said a police source familiar with the investigation who declined to be identified because the source was unauthorized to speak publicly about the details.

Detectives searching Johnson's apartment found books on training and fighting skills such as "Techniques and Equipment of the Deadly Marksmen Snipers" and "Attack Proof - the Ultimate Guide to Personal Protection," the source said.

They also found a plastic case with 15 rounds of .45 caliber ammunition, the same kind he used to shoot Ercolino, and police planned to examine the contents of Johnson's home computer for more clues to his motive, the source said.

Johnson was being threatened with eviction, the New York Post reported on Sunday.

Johnson had been laid off a year ago from Hazan Imports, across the street from the Empire State Building, where he was locked in a dispute with the victim, police said. Johnson claimed Ercolino had failed to sell enough of his creations and held a grudge, they said.

Animosity between Johnson and Ercolino had prompted them to file complaints about each other with police in April 2011, police said.

Ercolino, 41, was a salesman at Hazan. He lived with his girlfriend in Hoboken, New Jersey.

'Cyborg' Tissues: Merging engineered human tissues with bio-compatible nanoscale wires

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Harvard scientists have, for the first, time created a type of "cyborg" tissue by embedding a three-dimensional network of functional, bio-compatible nanoscale wires into engineered human tissues.

As described in a paper published August 26 in Nature Materials, a multi-institutional research team led by Charles M. Lieber, the Mark Hyman, Jr. Professor of Chemistry at Harvard and Daniel Kohane, a Harvard Medical School professor in the Department of Anesthesia at Children's Hospital Boston developed a system for creating nanoscale "scaffolds" which could be seeded with cells which later grew into tissue.

Also contributing to the work were Robert Langer, from the Koch Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Zhigang Suo, the Allen E. and Marilyn M. Puckett Professor of Mechanics and Materials at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

"The current methods we have for monitoring or interacting with living systems are limited," said Lieber. "We can use electrodes to measure activity in cells or tissue, but that damages them. With this technology, for the first time, we can work at the same scale as the unit of biological system without interrupting it. Ultimately, this is about merging tissue with electronics in a way that it becomes difficult to determine where the tissue ends and the electronics begin."

The research addresses a concern that has long been associated with work on bioengineered tissue -- how to create systems capable of sensing chemical or electrical changes in the tissue after it has been grown and implanted. The system might also represent a solution to researchers' struggles in developing methods to directly stimulate engineered tissues and measure cellular reactions.

"In the body, the autonomic nervous system keeps track of pH, chemistry, oxygen and other factors, and triggers responses as needed," Kohane explained. "We need to be able to mimic the kind of intrinsic feedback loops the body has evolved in order to maintain fine control at the cellular and tissue level."

Using the autonomic nervous system as inspiration, Bozhi Tian, a former doctoral student under Lieber and former postdoctoral fellow in the Kohane and Langer labs, and collaborator Jia Liu worked in Lieber's lab at Harvard to build mesh-like networks of nanoscale silicon wires -- about 30 -- 80 nm in diameter -- shaped like flat planes or in a reticular conformation.

The process of building the networks, Lieber said, is similar to that used to etch microchips.

Beginning with a two-dimensional substrate, researchers laid out a mesh of organic polymer around nanoscale wires, which serve as the critical nanoscale sensing elements. Nanoscale electrodes, which connect the nanowire elements, were then built within the mesh to enable nanowire transistors to measure the activity in cells without damaging them. Once complete, the substrate was dissolved, leaving researchers with a net-like sponge or a mesh that can be folded or rolled into a host of three dimensional shapes.

Once complete, the networks were porous enough to allow the team to seed them with cells and encourage those cells to grow in 3D cultures.

"Previous efforts to create bioengineered sensing networks have focused on two-dimensional layouts, where culture cells grow on top of electronic components, or on conformal layouts where probes are placed on tissue surfaces," said Tian. "It is desirable to have an accurate picture of cellular behavior within the 3D structure of a tissue, and it is also important to have nanoscale probes to avoid disruption of either cellular or tissue architecture."

Using heart and nerve cells, the team successfully engineered tissues containing embedded nanoscale networks without affecting the cells' viability or activity. Using the embedded devices, they were able to detect electrical signals generated by cells deep within the tissue, and to measure changes in those signals in response to cardio- or neuro-stimulating drugs.

Researchers were also able to construct bioengineered blood vessels, and used the embedded technology to measure pH changes -- as would be seen in response to inflammation, ischemia and other biochemical or cellular environments -- both inside and outside the vessels.

Though a number of potential applications exist for the technology, the most near-term use, Lieber said, may come from the pharmaceutical industry, where researchers could use the technology to more precisely study how newly-developed drugs act in three dimensional tissues, rather than thin layers of cultured cells. The system might also one day be used to monitor changes inside the body and react accordingly, whether through electrical stimulation or the release of a drug.

Layton Hower ? Money and You: Improve Your Relationship

It may be tough to spend time thinking about your financial situation, but there is no escaping the fact that money is an important part of life. This article is full of tips that will help you get your finances under control.

Your expenses and after tax income should dictate your spending habits. Begin by totaling all your income after taxes, including salary, child support, alimony or any other income. How much you payout cannot exceed the amount of money you receive in a month.

Make sure you have a detailed list of expenses when creating a budget. You should include all payments, even payments that occur occasionally. Many costs such as vehicle maintenance and insurance premiums may not be monthly, but they do occur regularly and should be planned for. You list of expenses should also include miscellaneous expenses, such as entertainment and spontaneous purchases. Remember to make allowances for even the least formal of your spending, like the babysitter down the block or the coffee you pick up on the way to work. By carefully detailing all your expenses, you will be able to put together the proper budget for your family.

Now that you have a detailed snapshot of your household?s incoming and outgoing cash flow, it is essential that you devise a workable budget. Remove all unnecessary expenses from your budget. You will find more leeway in your budget if you stop buying expensive coffee drinks from Starbucks or eating fast food.

Excessive utility costs are an indication that it may be time to make some upgrades to your home. Weatherized windows can reduce the amount of heating and cooling you need to do in your home. Install a new energy-efficient hot water tank in order to reduce your power consumption. If you want to lower the cost of your water bill, fix any leaks in your pipes, and do not run the dishwasher if it is not full. Making these fixes may cost you money up front, however, in the future you will reap the benefits.

Swap old, inefficient appliances for those that use less energy. It?s true that these may be more expensive, but the savings will add up along the way. Unplug the electrical cords from any appliances or electronics that are not being used. Over time, you will see a difference in utility costs.

You may want to check if you need to upgrade the insulation in your attic since heat can escape from it if not properly insulated. Performing these repairs will make heating and cooling your home much less costly.

The advice in this article can help you save money, and keep more of your income. The additional cash can be used for home improvements or possibly energy-efficient electronics or appliances that can lower your utility bills. In this way you can elevate your standard of living and also take more control over your finances.

The Hardgainer Solution Part 2 - My Health & Fitness

The Hardgainer Solution Part 2: Nutrition and Rest

In this article, a follow up to the first article focused on helping hardgainers pack on muscle mass fast, we?re going to bring the formula full circle and give you everything you need to start building size and strength with the quickness.

In part 1 I gave you a specific training protocol that implemented big, heavy, compound lifts to stimulate the maximum cross sectional area of muscle fibers and kick your growth hormones into overdrive.

All of that is great. But, if your body is lacking in the nutrition and rest it needs to add muscle to your body, it will all be in vain.

Nutrition for Weight GainLast week I had a skinny hardgainer at my gym timidly walk over and ask me why wasn?t gaining any size. I had watched him training and it left much to be desired, but when a person isn?t getting any bigger, the problem isn?t their training regimen. It?s their diet.

If you?re eating enough quality calories your body will grow, period.

Of course, if you?re not weight training most of it will be added to your physique in the form of fat, but that isn?t our concern right now. Our concern is combining muscle blasting weight training with a diet that will force muscle growth of grand proportions.

I asked the young man that approached me what he was eating on a daily basis, to which he responded, ?Oh, I eat all the time, so my diet can?t be the problem.?

?Is that so?? I asked with my left eyebrow raised in obvious skepticism. I then implored him to be more specific with what he was eating and found that he was consuming about 3,000 calories per day, consisting of mostly fast food, potato chips, sodas and other junk foods.

?First?, I said. ?Stop eating that junk and give your body something to work with.?

?What do you mean?? He inquired.

?Put simply, the food you?re feeding your body has very little nutritional value and is loaded with preservatives and other additives that are raising your estrogen levels and hindering your ability to build muscle.?

?Oh.? He said. ?I never thought of it like that before.?

I gave him a few additional tips and the conversation ended shortly thereafter. But before he left, I gave him the following quick grocery list:

  • Steak or Beef
  • Chicken Breasts (skinless)
  • White Fish and Salmon
  • Whole Milk
  • Whey Protein Powder and/or Powdered Egg Whites
  • Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes
  • White Rice
  • Whole Grain Bread
  • Broccoli
  • Bananas
  • Apples
  • Oranges

I also was sure to give him one last piece of advice?

?If you ever find yourself not adding weight after a full week, eat more. I don?t care how much you think you were eating. If your body isn?t growing, it needs more nutrition.?

The Hardgainer Metabolism

More often than not, the biggest reason a hardgainer isn?t putting on size is that they aren?t eating enough calories. They have a lightning fast metabolism and feel like they already eat a ton.

At the end of the day, though, if you aren?t growing, you need more calories.

If you find yourself struggling to eat enough throughout the day, you can:

  • Get yourself a weight gain supplement powder
  • Add olive oil to your meals, mix it with your protein drinks, or drink it straight ? olive oil is pure fat and calorically dense (one tablespoon contains 120 calories)
  • Eat more peanut butter (plain or on whole wheat bread)

Again, I don?t care how much you think you?re eating. If you aren?t seeing the needle on the scale move to the right after a week, you need more nutrition.

Hopefully you?re clear on how you need to be feeding your body to start growing.

Before we wrap up, there is one other often-overlooked aspect of gaining muscle we need to cover?

Resting Your Body

In part 1 I gave you a 3 workout weekly training plan to follow. You may be used to seeing five and six workouts per week with other training plans, but you have to trust me when I tell you that more is not always better.

For steroid users, five or six training sessions per week will work great. However, for the drug-free weight lifter this is too much, as it doesn?t allow for enough recovery time.

Remember, our muscles don?t grow while we are training them, but during times of rest. In fact, the time when muscle growth occurs most rapidly is during deep sleep when our body goes to work repairing strained muscle fibers, making them larger to prevent them from becoming strained when placed under similar loads in the future.

This is also why it?s important to make sure you?re getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night. Skimping on sleep takes away from the time your body has to focus on building up your muscles.

In other words, getting less than 8 hours of sleep per night is going to hinder your muscle growth. If you can swing it, 10 hours of straight sleep (or 8 hours of sleep with a nap during the day) is ideal.

It?s Time to Grow!

Struggling with being skinny, having very little muscle mass, not getting noticed by the ladies, and lacking self-confidence isn?t any fun. If this describes you, I want you to know that I feel for you.

That is why I?ve written this simple, yet effective, 2 part series to give you the plan of attack to show your genetics who?s the boss and kick your muscle gains into high gear.

If you?ve been lifting weights and having zero size gains to show for it, it?s because you weren?t implementing the aspects I?ve covered in these 2 articles.

Put these instructions to use and you will consistently grow larger ? I guarantee it!

Amateur jihad tests Syrian rebel resources

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - Talal Mohammad is a long way from Tennessee, and he's out of his depth.

In an olive grove a few miles from the frontlines of Aleppo, he's at a loss to explain to a battle-hardened bunch of Syrian rebels what exactly this prosperous, U.S.-trained Saudi dentist is doing there - and what he can offer to their cause.

"Why have you come?" asked one of his new comrades, sharply, as they shared a traditional evening meal, the iftar to break the Ramadan fast, in the twilight of a makeshift training camp.

"Don't get us wrong," the man adds quickly, anxious to show due respect to a guest at this solemn ritual of shared faith in Islam. "We appreciate your solidarity. But if you'd brought us money and weapons, that would have been much better."

Syrians' war to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad seems to be drawing ever greater numbers of fellow Arabs and other Muslims to the battlefield, many driven by a sense of religious duty to perform jihad, a readiness to suffer for Islam.

But while some are professional "jihadists", veterans of Iraq or Afghanistan, Chechnya or Libya, who bring combat and bomb-making skills that alarm the Western and Arab governments which have cheered the rebels on, many of these foreigners have little to offer Syrians but their goodwill and prayers, and plenty have ended up floundering well beyond their comfort zone.

For some rebel commanders, they are just getting in the way.

"It's very different on the ground," Talal Mohammad conceded as he shouldered his laptop and prepared for the short trek to the Turkish border and then a flight back home to Saudi Arabia and the wife and two young daughters he had left behind three weeks earlier, expecting to take part in a swift rebel victory.

"I was going to Syria thinking the liberation was a step or two away," said Mohammad, who spent a decade studying in the United States. Instead, he found a bitter, grinding, bloody struggle in which his dental qualifications from Tennessee and a willingness to do his bit proved to be of little interest to ill-armed rebels facing Assad's tanks, artillery and warplanes.

Senior fighters around Aleppo say it is a common story:

"This week alone, I have welcomed to Syria two doctors, a lawyer, a karate trainer and a social worker from Britain," said one who goes by the name Abu Mohammed and who leads a formation known as the Soqour al-Sham, or Falcon of Syria, Brigade.

"We have no shortage of men at all," he added. But some are more trouble than they're worth.

"I realize it's a religious duty to come to Syria for many of our brothers," said Abu Mohammed. "But those who come with no idea how they can help beyond their faith can be a burden."

EMOTIONAL

In conversations with foreign volunteers encountered this month around northwestern Syria, in rebel-held territories between Aleppo and Idlib, a pattern was evident: of piety stimulated into action by graphic coverage of civilian death and suffering on Arab satellite news channels - many controlled by Assad's enemies; and of a sense of dismay among these visiting jihadists at the scale of the task facing the opposition forces.

For some, being in Syria - a historic cultural focus for the Arab world - had more to do with their personal relationship with God than practical aid for the locals. Many Syrian fighters have little time for theology, even as the conflict takes on a sectarian cast between the mainly Sunni Muslim rebels and an army dominated by Assad's Shi'ite-aligned Alawite minority.

Commanders say their rear lines are already awash with clerics eager to bolster the faith of their young warriors, but that did not stop another imam, Abu Anas, leaving his flock at his mosque in the Egyptian city of Assiut to preach to rebels in the town of Binnish, near Idlib: "I am here to perform jihad for the sake of God," the 60-year-old preacher said. "I am doing this for God, not for any gain or prestige, only to please God."

Jihad, he pointed out, was a sacred duty for Muslims but was not only about going into battle. All had their part to play.

For the Manchester-educated Kuwaiti oil engineer who calls himself Abu Hareth, it was television images of children slain in May in the village of Houla which prompted him to leave behind affluent suburban comforts and head for Syria via the rough journey over the frontier from Turkey.

"I felt I would be held responsible before God if I allowed the blood of Muslims to continue to be spilled like this," he said. Though past fighting age, he had assured himself a welcome by arranging some $2 million in charity for bereaved families.

Assad says he is the target of a foreign-orchestrated plot. Sunni Islamists have long despised the ruling family; Assad's secular, nominally socialist, father massacred thousands of Muslim Brotherhood rebels in the 1980s. Religious fighters form only a part of the present uprising, though Islamists tend to dominate among the hundreds of foreigners volunteering in Syria.

SECTARIAN

For some, underlying a desire to help fellow Muslims - who are after all dying at the hands of people who say they are of the same faith - lurks the wider sectarian confrontation across the Middle East, between the Sunni rulers of powerful Arab states and a Shi'ite camp led by Assad's ally in non-Arab Iran.

"If what is happening to Sunnis in Syria is not ethnic cleansing by the Alawites, whose hearts are filled with sectarian hatred, what is it?" asked Abu Hareth, taking a swipe at "hypocrisy" among his own Shi'ite neighbors in the Gulf, who have long complained of Sunni oppression, in Bahrain and Iraq.

Among those volunteering for the frontline was a young Iraqi from Falluja, a bastion of the Sunni insurgency against U.S. occupation and Shi'ite-led governments that followed the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003: "For me, it's the same battle," said the man, who gave his first name as Jawad.

Though he had written his will and was ready for martyrdom, he said, he also did not want any trouble if he did return to his regular job - as an accountant for a Japanese firm in Dubai.

"America planted its Shi'ite stooges in Iraq, and America and Israel are now keeping Assad in power to stifle the awakening of the Sunnis," asserted Jawad, who said his infant sister had died in a U.S. raid in Falluja in 2004 and an elder brother was tortured to death by suspected Shi'ite militiamen.

"I am here," he said, "To avenge my sister and brother."

Though leaders of the revolt insist they can avoid a repeat of the sectarian and ethnic blood-letting seen in Iraq next door, an influx of Sunni fighters from there and elsewhere, and the mounting bitterness against not just Assad but all Alawites as the war goes on, means some Syrians now fear the worst.

Parisian physiotherapist Ahmad, 42, said a religion rooted in his Moroccan family prompted him to join the Syrian struggle and he now put his faith in the "wisdom" of clerical leaders to hold back the tide of anger: "They won't allow the Syrian people and the country to become another Afghanistan," he insisted.

But another Moroccan, Abu Qutada, a lawyer educated in Italy, said two weeks around Aleppo had convinced him the war would not end as soon as he had expected. Chatting at a rebel base near the Turkish border, he said: "Rivers of Sunni blood will flow before Syria is liberated from Assad's tyranny."

SURPRISES

Those foreign volunteers venturing into the country have often been shocked by what they find. Ahmad Bouzyan, a medical student from Sousse in Tunisia, said he was stunned by casualty counts each day that often surpassed the entire death toll for his own country's pioneering Arab Spring revolution last year.

"Every day as we sat at iftar, one or two more would be absent," he said of his comrades in arms, while preparing to return to his studies after a summer spent on the frontline around the town of Jabal al-Zawya. Only faith had kept him going when friends were killed: "We would touch the blood of a martyr and smell a fragrance and a smile would shine from his face."

Others were simply surprised at themselves.

A Saudi schoolteacher receiving his first lessons in firing a rifle could not contain his astonishment at what he was doing: "Allahu akbar!" (God is greatest) yelped the 39-year-old from Taif after losing off a couple of rounds under instruction from a Syrian rebel who barked: "Shoulders back. Don't be scared."

Giving his family name as Otaibi, the bearded teacher said he had kept his personal jihad from people back home, where the Saudi state is wary of home-grown Islamist militants despite its sympathy for the anti-Assad rebellion. In any case, few would guess where he was now: "Last time I was in Syria," he confided, "Was on vacation with a bunch of guys to have fun in Damascus."

For some, the greatest shock, however, remained how little the Syrians were interested in their foreign allies' presence and how much more pressing was the desperate need for weaponry.

Sari Oeib, a 23-year-old Libyan who saw action last year in his prosperous home city of Misrata, recalled as prepared to fly home for a break his astonishment at the price he had to pay for his rifle once in Syria - a mark of its scarcity - and how coveted his gun was by ill-armed locals fighting alongside him.

"I had to buy my AK-47 for $3,000," he said - easily 10 times the cost of such a weapon in much of the Middle East.

"And sometimes," Oeib said, "I'd feel my Syrian comrades were just waiting for me to die - to get hold of my weapon."

(AP) ? The Baltimore Ravens probably wouldn't mind if the regular season began a week from Sunday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, on the other hand, need all the time they can get before playing games that really count.

Joe Flacco passed for 266 yards and two touchdowns, and Baltimore received a strong performance from its defense in a 48-17 rout Thursday night.

Coming off a 27-12 defeat against the Detroit Lions, the Ravens were focused on scoring touchdowns instead of field goals and rectifying a defensive unit that was scorched for 507 yards.

They accomplished both goals with a solid showing against the previously unbeaten Jaguars.

"We're putting it all together now," Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb said.

Same with the offense. Flacco completed 27 of 36 passes before leaving early in the third quarter. Most important, he put two touchdowns on the board instead of settling for field goals.

"If this was a regular-season game, we would have come out (feeling) pretty good about it," he said.

The Jaguars had very few feel-good moments in a humbling defeat that came on the heels of wins over the New York Giants and New Orleans.

"How we respond from this will be the test of this football team," coach Mike Mularkey said. "It's like being punched in the mouth. In all three phases, we just didn't give ourselves a chance to compete the way we did in the first two games."

Baltimore amassed 571 yards in total offense and had five drives of at least 80 yards. The 48 points were the most ever scored by the Ravens in a preseason game.

With support from a defense that kept Jacksonville quarterback Blaine Gabbert in check, the Ravens (No. 5 in the AP Pro32) built a 20-3 lead before Flacco took a seat.

Gabbert went 11 for 21 for 117 yards over three quarters, and Rashad Jennings, starting in place of holdout Maurice Jones-Drew, gained 57 yards on 13 carries.

"I'm not pleased at all in my game tonight. I left a lot of yards out on the football field," Jennings said.

Jennings wasn't the only Jacksonville player to express disappointment after the blowout.

"Maybe that is what we needed, to have that bad a feeling, even in a preseason game," Mularkey said. "This is why we play exhibition games. This will be a true test of this team to see how we bounce back from this. I am anxious to see how this team responds after getting pounded like we did. In all three phases, we didn't do the things we needed to do."

Jacksonville cornerback Rashean Mathis played for the first time this summer following knee surgery, but Jaguars cornerback Aaron Ross was forced from the game with an ankle injury and tight end Zach Miller left in the second quarter with an injured leg.

Fortunately, the Jaguars still have one preseason game left before the opener against Minnesota.

"You can't go into the season feeling the way we do now," Gabbert said. "This one leaves a nasty, nasty taste in your mouth. You never want to lose a game like this, even if it isn't the regular season."

Against the Giants and Saints, Gabbert drove the Jaguars (2-1) to a touchdown on their opening possession. In this one, Jacksonville started on its own 5 after a Ravens punt and made only one first down ? on a 16-yard completion to first-round draft pick Justin Blackmon ? before kicking the ball away.

Ray Rice began the subsequent drive with a 28-yard run, but the march stalled inside the 10 before rookie Justin Tucker kicked a 33-yard field goal. It was an unfulfilling score for the Ravens (2-1), who were intent upon improving their inability to get touchdowns when inside the 20.

That shortcoming would be resolved in Baltimore's third drive. Flacco went 8 for 9 for 87 yards and made it 10-0 with a touchdown throw to Anquan Boldin.

The march started with a 16-yard pass to Smith, who came up limping but returned later in the series and caught a key third-down pass. Smith missed last week's game with a sprained ankle.

Following another Jacksonville punt, Flacco went 5 for 5 on a 30-yard drive that ended with a 53-yard field goal by Tucker. In his effort to take the job from incumbent Billy Cundiff, Tucker has made all five of his field goal tries this preseason, including two from beyond 50 yards.

Gabbert finally got the Jaguars rolling late in the half, directing a 12-play, 73-yard march that produced a field goal with 56 seconds remaining.

On their first possession of the second half, the Ravens moved 80 yards to take a 20-3 lead. Flacco went 7 for 9 for 70 yards, completing passes of 7, 32 and 8 yards to Smith before concluding his night with a TD toss to Leach.
